In UTILITY:SYNC/TEMPO, set TempoSync to MIDI for the DIN MIDI IN, or AUTO if you deliberately want automatic source selection. Then confirm the other device is transmitting MIDI clock.
Do this first
- Press UTILITY and open SYNC/TEMPO.
- Set TempoSync to MIDI for a MIDI IN source; use AUTO only when automatic selection is intended.
- Connect the master’s MIDI OUT to TR-8S MIDI IN.
- Start the master and verify it transmits MIDI clock.
Diagnose it
Is TempoSync set to MIDI or AUTO?
Yes: Confirm the source’s clock output and the DIN cable direction.
No: Choose MIDI for DIN clock input, then retest.
Are both USB and MIDI clock connected while using AUTO?
Yes: USB takes priority in AUTO; remove or account for the competing USB clock.
No: Check the master’s clock-transmit setting.
Expected result
The TR-8S tempo synchronizes to MIDI clock received at MIDI IN.
Why this works
Roland documents MIDI as the MIDI-IN tempo source and notes that USB has priority when both inputs supply clock in AUTO.
